We began our morning at 7:15 today, and the sun was already shining. It was a beautiful breezy morning, and we had an incredible breakfast prepared by the JHC staff. Around 8:00 Becca, our guide, arrived and gave us an overview of JHC and Nueva Vida, the city in which we were working today. We discussed the politics of owning land in Nicaragua and the effects of investments over the past 30 years. We also talked about how Nueva Vida came to be and what JHC has been doing over the past few years to help the situation. Once Becca finished we jumped in vehicles and traveled to the health clinic, where we were split up into multiple groups for specific jobs. Some of the jobs included working on installing a utility pole, making earthquake-proof columns for the new building of the clinic, painting a storage area in the current building, working in the pharmacy, setting up walls for the new building, and going on house calls for residents of the community with our doctor Emily. Overall we had a very productive day, with multiple coats of paint added, the utility pole put into place, and many patients visited. The OBGYN at Nueva Vida is currently on leave due to health reason, so Emily has been extremely instrumental for the community. The pharmacy was full of prescriptions, and many patients left with the medications they needed.
At about noon, we returned to eat lunch and went back at 1:15 to continue the work. Then, at around 4:30 we returned back to JHC and many of us went into the pool to cool off. Other people went out to relax on the porch and took a walk around the JHC area. Finally, dinner was wonderful; there were baked potatoes, beef, vegetable medley, and coleslaw. Currently, most people are winding down for the night, and preparing for another fantastic day tomorrow. Everyone is happy and healthy!
