Wednesday: El Porvenir

After Paul´s 615 wakeup, we embarked on a nap inducing bus ride through the Nicaraguan countryside. After exiting the highway, our day finally began. Another bumpy ride down a dirt road ended when the bus could go no further. We climbed atop an open trailer as a tractor pulled our way up the bouncy path to the summit. We only lost one person on the way up, and managed to claim her before it was too late. When we reached the top, we found a view too beautiful to be captured in photographs. El Porvenir, a coffee co-op consisting of […]

Sponsor a Hormonal Implant !

Hi everyone! After learning more about Nicaragua this morning from a guest speaker, we headed back to the health clinic and got to work.  Even though it was a long and tiring day yesterday, everyone was ready to jump back in! We continued to assemble the earthquake proof columns, paint the storage room, work in the pharmacy, build walls in the new building, and shadow doctors. Third Day!

We began our morning at 7:15 today, and the sun was already shining. It was a beautiful breezy morning, and we had an incredible breakfast prepared by the JHC staff. We discussed the politics of owning land in Nicaragua and the effects of investments over the past 30 years. We also talked about how Nueva Vida came to be and what JHC has been doing over the past few years to help the situation. Once Becca […]

First full day in Nicaragua!

Hi everyone, It’s our first day and we’ve already hit the ground running. Today, we woke up to a delicious breakfast and an awesome sunrise. Some of us went on a run, drank coffee and had some great conversations. Today, breakfast was fresh fruit, freshly baked bread, marmalade and butter, rice and beans, and eggs. I’ve never been this well fed in my life. We went into Managua today and saw many parts of the city. Becca, who has been living in Nicaragua since 2001 and works for the JHC, took us around the city and provided an awesome narrative […]

T-minus 11 Days Until March Brigade Take Off!!!

We are a little bit over a week away from leaving Bucknell’s campus and starting our service-learning trip to Nicaragua! I can’t believe that the time has come so soon – it seems that I have been preparing for this trip for months, and now, instead of the time remaining being months, it’s now down to days! Our Brigade has worked tirelessly fundraising and preparing for this trip, and I am sure the other members are just as enthusiastic as I am. Personally, from working in the Office of Civic Engagement as a Brigade intern, I have learned so much about […]
